Shop Cuts Cost of Kids’ Clothing Down to Size

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Now that I’m shopping for a 1-year-old granddaughter, I’m even more grateful for the many fine resale stores in the Los Angeles area. And when I visit these stores, it is pleasing to see the many mothers and grandmothers taking advantage of the savings.

When a new shop opens, this grandma, her daughter and granddaughter are quick to check it out. Recently the three of us marched into Second Generation, a new entry in the world of kids’ resale.

It’s a beautifully organized store and, judging from the current merchandise, I would guess this is going to be a major contender in the Valley consignment store category.

When owner Jodee Spears, herself a young mother and dedicated bargain hunter, needed inventory for her opening two months ago, she ran a classified ad stating that she would be offering a “onetime free pickup service.” In no time, the racks were filled.

The day we visited, there were truly good deals on strollers, car seats and other necessities that can run up expenses for new parents. Car seats were $27.50; good strollers, such as an Aprica, were about one-third of the original price with little wear and tear. A Graco double stroller was only $70.

There are lots of name labels and baby stuff here. Some Baby Beluga two-piece rompers that sell new for around $18 were $8.25, and Gap overalls for boys 12 to 18 months were $8 and $8.50.

For young girls, Guess? jeans that looked as though they had never been worn were tagged $15, about one-third the original price. Izod and Bugle Boy shirts for young boys were $4.50. All apparel is clean and in good condition.

Be sure to check out the shoes, with lots of wear left in them and in sizes 0 to 7; books, which are priced from 50 cents to $2; and the selection of toys, puzzles, stuffed animals and infant products.

For those who want to place items on consignment, you get 40% of the selling price if it’s under $75 and 50% if it is over $75.
