Moorpark’s Mayor Has Bypass Surgery

After experiencing chest pains for more than a week, Moorpark Mayor Paul Lawrason is recovering from coronary bypass surgery at Columbia Los Robles Hospital, family members said Wednesday.

His wife, Connie Lawrason, said he is rebounding quickly from Tuesday’s surgery and could be released as soon as Saturday.

“He’s just doing fantastic,” she said.

Lawrason, who has had several operations to clear his arteries, announced in April that he would not seek reelection in November. Many considered Lawrason’s health one of the reasons behind his decision, but Lawrason denied it at the time.

Connie Lawrason said her husband had recently felt a tightening in his chest and consulted his doctor about the problem. After an exam Monday, Lawrason was admitted to Los Robles.

Doctors performed a double-bypass operation Tuesday, grafting veins onto two arteries. Although both arteries had been cleared in previous operations, they were again closing to the flow of blood.

Connie Lawrason said she hoped that the operation would keep her husband out of the hospital for a long time.

“In fact, the doctor said I probably won’t see him for another 20 years,” she said.
