Another year of pain for Adamson

Share

By now, Kelly Adamson should have given up soccer, frustrated and fed up with a game that has limited her mobility and at times broken her heart. But she hasn’t and she won’t.

Adamson, a sophomore forward on the Stanford women’s soccer team and a former Royal High standout, is suffering through her third injury-plagued season in the last four years.

As a high school junior and senior, Adamson withstood a two-year ordeal involving reconstructive surgery on her left knee.

Last year was Adamson’s first healthy season at Stanford. She appeared in 18 of Stanford’s 20 games, scored 10 goals, including two match-winners, and helped the Cardinal into the NCAA Division I playoffs.

Now, the 19-year-old may take a medical redshirt season after minor surgery on her left knee Sept. 5 to remove tissue under the kneecap. She has not played this year and Adamson said her knee is still painful.

“I thought it would be a quick thing and I’d sit out a little while, but six weeks later I’m still sitting,” Adamson said.

“If I’m not ready I’m not going to push it. I could come back and risk further injury by not being fully fit or I could rest it and have a great year next year, which sounds more appealing to me.”

Oregon’s Brown is out: Former Taft High tailback Jerry Brown, a redshirt freshman at Oregon, will be sidelined for at least five weeks after breaking his left hand in practice this week.

Brown, who started two games for the Ducks, has 151 yards rushing and one touchdown.
