Strug on Ice; ‘Giant’ Returns

* FAMILY: Olympic gold-medal gymnast Kerri Strug will be a guest in selected performances of “The Magic of MGM, an Ice Capades Production,” at the Pond of Anaheim, today at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 3 and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. (Story, F30). . . . The We Tell Stories theater troupe serves up Greek mythology in its romp for the whole family, “The Truth About Medusa,” at Occidental College’s Keck Theater in L.A., Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. . . . Blue Palm, the offbeat, husband-and-wife comedy-dance team, takes a wacky look at the world through “The Five Senses,” a free family show at Barnsdall Art Park’s Gallery Theatre in Hollywood on Saturday at 2 p.m.

* DANCE: The San Francisco Ballet will complete its engagement of “Swan Lake” with three performances this week at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa. Dancing the principal roles today at 8 p.m. are Tina LeBlanc and David Palmer. Katita Waldo and Benjamin Pierce will take over on Saturday at 2 p.m. Joanna Berman and Cyril Pierre will dance Saturday at 8 p.m. . . . The exciting repertory ensemble Philadanco gives a single performance on Saturday in the Luckman Theatre at Cal State L.A. . . . Pilobolus celebrates its 25th anniversary at the Smothers Theatre in Malibu tonight and Saturday with the local premiere of “Aeros,” co-commissioned by Pepperdine University. . . . The off-Broadway hip-hop revue “Jam on the Groove” continues at the Veterans Wadsworth Theater in Westwood through Saturday. . . . The revisionist butoh group Sankai Juku presents the full-evening “Yuragi” tonight and Saturday at L.A.’s Wiltern Theatre.

* MOVIES: Although too long and too heavy-handed in its social conscience, “Giant” (Edwards Newport Cinemas, Newport Beach) nonetheless remains a ‘50s classic, with Rock Hudson especially impressive. . . . Alexandre Rockwell’s sentimental but endearing “Somebody to Love” (selected theaters) showcases Rosie Perez as a taxi dancer yearning for stardom. A large supporting cast includes Harvey Keitel, Anthony Quinn, Steve Buscemi and Quentin Tarantino. . . . “The Divine Rita: Hayworth, Gilda and Glamour” kicks off tonight at 7:30 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art with “Cover Girl” (1944) and “You Were Never Lovelier” (1942). Of special interest in this Hayworth series is its 7:30 p.m. Saturday program with the rarely seen “Meet Nero Wolfe” (1936), featuring Hayworth’s first real screen role, plus the 1934 “La Cucaracha” dancing short and Burt Kennedy’s “The Money Trap” (1965), an effective, downbeat re-teaming of Glenn Ford and Hayworth nearly 20 years after “Gilda.” Kennedy is scheduled to appear.

* THEATER: “Medea,” the ancient Greek tragedy by Euripedes about a woman scorned, opens Saturday at the Alternative Repertory Theatre. . . . “Company,” the Sondheim musical about marriage, is getting a revelatory production at the Laguna Playhouse’s Moulton Theater in Laguna Beach. . . . “Speed-the-Plow,” David Mamet’s Hollywood satire, has been extended at the Ensemble Theatre in Orange. . . . And South Coast Repertory’s hit production of “An Ideal Husband,” by Oscar Wilde, closes Sunday in Costa Mesa. . . . “The Boys in the Band” has been extended through Oct. 19 at the Theater District in Costa Mesa. . . . For a sublime theatrical experience, don’t miss the Lincoln Center’s production of “The Heiress,” Ruth and Augustus Goetz’s psychological drama about an introverted, wealthy young woman and a fortune hunter, at the Ahmanson Theatre in L.A.

* MUSIC: The Angeles String Quartet will open the 38th year of Fullerton Friends of Music concerts on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton. The free program will include Haydn’s Quartet in E-flat, Opus 17, No. 3; Korngold’s Quartet No. 3, and Schubert’s Quartet No. 14 (“Death and the Maiden”). . . . Brazilian pianist Arnaldo Cohen makes his Southern California debut, opening the second season of the reorganized New West Symphony, conducted by Boris Brott, tonight in Thousand Oaks, Saturday in Oxnard. Cohen is soloist in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy and Third Concerto, and Liszt’s “Totentanz” at both locations. . . . Lucinda Carver leads the Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra and soloists in a Bach/Mozart/Bloch/Haydn program on Saturday at the Wilshire-Ebell Theatre in L.A. . . . Norberto Cappone plays Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Pasadena Pops Orchestra, Victor Vener, conducting, at Descanso Gardens in La Canada-Flintridge, Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

* JAZZ: Dizzy Gillespie disciple Arturo Sandoval, the trumpeter who defected from Cuba in 1990 with Gillespie’s help, plays the Robert B. Moore Theatre on the Orange Coast College campus Saturday. . . . Buddy Collette is the honoree at the Los Angeles Jazz Society’s Tribute and Awards Dinner/Concert on Sunday at the Biltmore Hotel in L.A. Other participants include Oscar Brashear, Alan Broadbent, Harold Land, Eric Reed and Hubert Laws.

* POP MUSIC: Singer-songwriter Pete Droge plays tonight at McCabe’s and Saturday at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. . . . “Wateke 96,” a rock en espanol extravaganza headlined by Spain’s Heroes del Silencio, comes to Glen Helen Blockbuster Pavilion in Devore on Saturday and the Universal Amphitheatre on Sunday.

* ART: Opening Sunday at the Bowers Museum, “Seeking Immortality: Chinese Tomb Sculpture From the Schloss Collection” includes more than 200 ancient clay sculptures representing wealthy deceased individuals, their animals and household goods. Reflecting social, moral and economic aspects of everyday life, these images date from the 3rd century BC to the 8th century. . . . Joseph Cornell was a reclusive genius who turned collecting odds and ends into extraordinary artistry. His capacity for enchantment comes through clearly in an exhibition of two dozen box constructions and a dozen collages at Manny Silverman Gallery in West Hollywood, through Nov. 9.
