Officials Urge Retirees to Stay Calm
Social Security officials asked retirees Thursday not to be alarmed over the computer glitch that has resulted in $850 million in under-payments but indicated that they were braced for a deluge of calls from beneficiaries.
The agency hopes to identify affected individuals during the next year and send them letters stating that they are owed additional payments. Shortly after, they will send second letters detailing the amounts.
Individuals who were shortchanged will get a check covering back benefits. Their regular monthly benefits will increase as well.
