A painter spray-painting a kitchen in a Simi Valley home ignited a small fire that slightly injured two people, authorities said Friday.

A kitchen stove pilot light ignited the paint about 9:40 p.m. Thursday as Lucas Sisson, 36, was spraying the kitchen walls, a Ventura County Fire Department spokeswoman said.

The flash fire that resulted caused second-degree burns on about 18% of Sisson’s body, the spokeswoman said. Marlene Ramsdell, 35, who was also in the kitchen, suffered first-degree burns on about 10% of her body, the spokeswoman said.

Both victims were taken to Simi Valley Hospital, treated for the burns and released, hospital spokeswoman Jolynn de la Torre said.

Fire investigators estimate the total damage at about $40,000.
