NCAA DIVISION I-AA

* PORTLAND STATE (1-3) vs. CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE (2-2)

At North Campus Stadium, Northridge, 6:05 p.m.

The Vikings are in the Big Sky Conference but this game will not count in the standings because Portland State is not eligible to win the title this year. The Vikings are in their first season in Division I-AA, up from Division II. Though both teams pass more than they run, perhaps the most interesting player to watch tonight will be Northridge junior running back Norman Clarke. Clarke figured to be the Matadors’ No. 1 running back when he was signed after gaining 1,184 yards last year at San Bernardino Valley College, but he has failed to beat out senior Chad Marsalek. With Marsalek is out with a sprained ankle, this is Clarke’s opportunity to shine. Still, don’t expect Northridge to run too often. Quarterback Aaron Flowers is among the national leaders in total offense, averaging 285.0 yards per game. Northridge’s key defensively will be to improve on its conference-worst pass defense, which has allowed 344.3 yards per game. Eric Kiesau, a former Glendale High and Glendale College standout, has completed 62% of his passes for 227.5 yards per game for the Vikings. Gary Clemons, a transfer from Moorpark College, is averaging 62.5 yards.

NCAA DIVISION III

* CAL LUTHERAN (0-2) vs. AZUSA PACIFIC (2-1)

At Azusa Pacific, 6 p.m.

Cal Lutheran will probably be without running back Fredrik Nanhed, who suffered a hamstring injury in the season opener. Bill Busch, who has rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown in 34 carries, and Jason Chang, who has 27 yards and a touchdown in 13 carries, will try to pick up the slack. Ryan Huisenga has completed 37 of 72 passes for 330 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions. But Coach Scott Squires said backup Zack Hernandez (eight of 12, 68 yards, one interception) will get an extended look. Azusa Pacific’s Elijah Raphael, a junior from Valley College, has rushed for 155 yards in 56 carries. He also has six receptions for 112 yards and three touchdowns. Darryl Nolan has 17 receptions for 286 yards and a touchdown. He averages 140 all-purpose yards a game.

JUNIOR COLLEGE

* GLENDALE (2-1) vs. VALLEY (2-1)

At Valley College, Van Nuys 7 p.m.

Glendale is producing 413.3 yards per game. Ramone Archie (389 yards) and Rahsaan Harrison (319 yards) rank second and third in rushing in the conference. Aryn Hart passed for 145 yards last week and has 2,153 yards in his career, 1,124 yards short of Rob Huffman’s school record set in 1985-86. Valley held Bakersfield to 299 yards last week. Tackle Edgar Nava and linebacker Jeff Macrea each had eight tackles for the Monarchs. David Lins is second in the WSC with 668 passing yards and has thrown 104 passes without an interception. The Monarchs, ranked 12th in the state, are playing their first home game of the season. Glendale leads series, 14-11, dating to 1950. Valley won last year, 48-35.

Santa Barbara’s run-and-shoot offense ranks first in the conference, averaging 478.0 yards. The Raiders are first in the WSC in passing defense, yielding 108.7 yards per game.
