Cal State Fullerton Beats UC Irvine in Soccer

Cal State Fullerton’s Jay Gomez scored on a six-yard shot at the 89-minute mark as the Titans defeated UC Irvine, 2-1, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s soccer game Friday at UC Irvine.

The seventh-ranked Titans recorded their first conference victory and are 7-2-1 overall.

The two teams played each other to a scoreless tie until the 81st minute. Forward Sheldon Thomas, Fullerton’s leading scorer, headed a ball into the net from six feet for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Joe DiGiamarino got the assist.

UC Irvine (4-4-1, 0-1) tied it a minute later. Freshman defender Tyler Theslof scored from 10 yards on assists from Pat Lee and Ryan Ruggerello.

Seven minutes later, Gomez scored on an Adam Black assist to give Fullerton a 2-1 lead.

Titan goalkeeper Mike Forensich had six saves in the victory.

In Big West Conference volleyball:

Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo 3, UC Irvine 0--Jamie Hill had 15 kills but UC Irvine (1-13, 0-3) lost to Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo (9-4, 1-2), 15-10, 17-15, 15-11, at San Luis Obispo.

UC Santa Barbara 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Katie Crawford recorded 10 kills as UC Santa Barbara (11-4, 3-0) defeated Cal State Fullerton (8-6, 0-3), 15-8, 15-2, 15-6, in Rob Gym at Santa Barbara. Heather Bassett lead the Titans with 11 kills.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo:

California 16, Long Beach State 10--Third-ranked California (6-1, 3-0) scored the game’s first five goals. Baran Dilaver and Brad Kittredge each scored a game-high four goals for Cal. Brian Brown led the 11th-ranked 49ers (1-7, 0-4) with two points.
