Police Probe Shooting of Man by Bar Security Guard

Police are investigating the shooting of a man by a security guard at a bar early Saturday, after the man allegedly tried to run the guard over with a car.

Fabian Carpio Uribe, 27, was in stable condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange with a gunshot wound to the chest after security guard Cesar Carrera, 26, shot him at 1 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The dispute unfolded when Uribe and the manager of Zarapes Bar, in the 12700 block of Garden Grove Boulevard, started arguing inside the bar, Garden Grove Police Sgt. Joe Johnson said.

The manager asked Carrera, a private guard assigned to the bar, to remove Uribe. Carrera works for Performance Security in Santa Ana.

“As Uribe was attempting to drive out of the parking lot, he attempted to drive at Carrera with his vehicle,” Johnson said. “Carrera fired at Uribe, striking him.”

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, but, Johnson said, “Uribe is now a suspect in an assault with a deadly weapon [the car] on the security guard.”

Police are “also looking at the security guard, to see if he had the right to shoot,” Johnson said. “We feel he did, to protect himself, at this point.”
