NOTES : Gwynn Likes Year He and Padres Had

Share

As proud as he was of the Padres’ performance this year, Tony Gwynn was proud of himself. He came back from the heel injury that sidelined him in July to win a seventh batting title. He had a little help from an obscure rule, but he has come to grips with that and his accomplishment.

“I’m pretty ecstatic about this year,” he said. “I had such a slow start where I wasn’t hitting the ball good, then missed six or seven weeks with the injury. But I didn’t waste that time. I looked at my tapes, studied my notes, did my homework and came out of nowhere to win.

“I feel good about that. I mean, once I get away and sit down and analyze all this, I’m sure I’ll look on it as something special.”

Gwynn batted .308 in the three games of the division playoff series against the Cardinals after batting .353 during the regular season and .374 after he returned from the heel injury on Aug. 6.
