School Uniform Policy to Be Debated
Facing divided public opinion, the school board tonight will consider two ways of implementing a mandatory uniform policy: districtwide or on a site-by-site basis.
At a public hearing two weeks ago, officials of Santa Ana Unified School District heard from 44 speakers, with just over half opposing a uniform policy. But a recent school district survey found that about 75% of respondents favor a mandatory uniform policy.
If the policy becomes districtwide, navy blue skirts or pants and white tops would be the dress code.
The district recommends the same color scheme for schools that implement a uniform policy individually, though each campus would have the option of choosing its own.
If the school board allows each site to decide for itself, the family of each student would have one vote on whether to require uniforms. A mandatory dress code at a particular campus would have to be passed by 75% of its voters.
District officials have recommended uniforms, saying that they allow students to focus on their studies, rather than their clothes, and help cut down on problems such as tardiness and truancy.
Opponents counter that wearing a uniform will not deter troublemakers.
