Angels’ Snow Wins Gold Glove Award

Angel first baseman J.T. Snow won his second consecutive American League Gold Glove Award. Snow was among seven AL repeat winners, including Seattle center fielder Ken Griffey Jr., who won for the seventh consecutive time, and Baltimore second baseman Roberto Alomar, who won for the sixth.

“I didn’t expect it,” Snow said. “It’s nice. It’s an honor. But I think I’d trade it for a winning season or a playoff berth.”

Angel pitcher Mark Langston, who won five consecutive Gold Glove awards between 1991 and ‘95, was unseated by Oriole right-hander Mike Mussina. Seattle right fielder Jay Buhner was the only other first-time winner.

Texas catcher Ivan Rodriguez won for the fifth consecutive season. Chicago third baseman Robin Ventura, Cleveland shortstop Omar Vizquel and Indian center fielder Kenny Lofton each won for the fourth time.

Snow ended the lengthy reign of nine-time winner Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees last year. This past year, Snow made 10 errors in 1,387 chances for a .993 fielding percentage.

National League winners will be announced today.
