New-Look Red Wings Win, 2-0

It was a big night Wednesday for Detroit. The Red Wings pulled off a blockbuster trade for Brendan Shanahan, played their home opener and ended Edmonton’s three-game winning streak.
Vyacheslav Kozlov and Bob Rouse scored the goals as the Red Wings defeated the Oilers, 2-0, before 19,983 at Joe Louis Arena.
The Red Wings, who traded holdout Keith Primeau, veteran Paul Coffey and a No. 1 draft pick to the Hartford Whalers in exchange for Shanahan and Brian Glynn, outshot the Oilers, 30-18, and goaltender Chris Osgood recorded the shutout.
New York Islanders 3, Ottawa 3--Alexandre Daigle scored with 1.5 seconds left in regulation and the Senators salvaged a tie in their home opener at Kanata, Ontario.
Daniel Alfredsson had pulled Ottawa within 3-2 with his second goal of the game at 17:00 of the third period. Alfredsson also picked up an assist on Daigle’s goal. Rookie Andreas Johansson, Zigmund Palffy and Nicklas Andersson scored for the Islanders.
St. Louis 3, Calgary 1--Brian Noonan scored his first goal of the season, Jim Campbell scored a goal and set up another, and goaltender Grant Fuhr made 31 saves, including 15 in the second period, as the Blues won at Calgary.
Buffalo 2, Vancouver 1--Dominik Hasek capped a 34-save performance with a solid third period and Brian Holzinger scored the tie-breaking goal with 14:18 remaining as the Sabres edged the Canucks at Vancouver.
