Volunteers to Help School Get Online
School officials and parents at Patrick Henry Middle School are determined that their students will not miss out on the Information Age.
The school will move one step closer to that goal today when parents and other volunteers complete a wiring project begun earlier this year.
Patrick Henry is one of the local schools participating in NetDay ‘96, a nationwide effort to bring schools online. “We hope to be completely up and running” by the day’s end, said Ladelle Barnett, assistant principal at the school.
Patrick Henry participated in the first NetDay in March, Barnett said, and since then the school has established Internet connections in about half of the classrooms and in a media center that has 11 computers.
Barnett said Patrick Henry is advancing more rapidly than many other schools because of its success in getting parents involved and because corporate sponsors, such as Kaiser Permanente and GTE, have donated equipment and technical expertise.
Once the wiring is complete and all the classrooms are connected, the school plans to create its own home page for the World Wide Web, Barnett said.
Peggy Akbar, whose son is in seventh grade at Patrick Henry, said it is important to her that her son have access to the educational materials available via the Internet.
“It’s an incredible tool, like reference materials in the library, only faster,” Akbar said.
