Carl G. Rosberg; Expert on African Politics

Carl G. Rosberg, 73, UC Berkeley professor, author and expert on African politics. Born in Oakland, Rosberg served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was a prisoner of war in Romania. After the war, he earned his doctorate at Oxford. Among his writings were two books considered seminal in African political history, “The Myth of ‘Mau Mau’--Nationalism in Kenya,” and “Personal Rule in Black Africa.” Rosberg joined the Berkeley faculty in 1958, and was director of the Institute of International Studies from 1973 to 1989 and chairman of the political science department from 1969 to 1974. The campus named its Carl G. Rosberg International Studies Library in his honor. On Oct. 3 in Oakland.
