Trick Play Gets Magnolia Started in Win

They have been called flea-flickers, gadget plays or trick plays.

Magnolia pulled one off on the first play of the game in its 32-7 victory over Laguna Beach Friday night at Glover Stadium.

Eric Freund, the Sentinels’ quarterback, threw to Anthony Zaragosa, Magnolia’s other quarterback, who passed 71 yards to Joe Camarillo to Laguna Beach’s 11-yard line.

Two plays later, Sam Uai dived over from two yards for the score. Uai finished with 63 yards in 10 carries and three scores.

Uai kicked off and the ball hit Duncan Brady, one of the Artists’ front-line players, and Uai recovered.

Will Speer eventually scored from seven yards and ran in the two-point conversion to give Magnolia 14-0 first-quarter lead.

Speer led Magnolia (3-2) in rushing with 129 yards in 16 carries.

The Sentinels increased their lead to 20-0 when Uai scored from four yards with 3:25 remaining in the first half.

Laguna Beach (0-4-1) finally scored on a Dyle Senico 15-yard run. The drive was helped by pass plays of 17 and 33 yards from Marc Ornelas to Miles Howe and Raymond Amador, respectively.

Magnolia scored 29 seconds before halftime when Zaragosa ran in from three yards. The drive was aided by a Zaragosa pass of 49 yards to Freund.

The lone score of the second half came when Uai had a two-yard touchdown run with 6:47 remaining in the game.
