Board Weighs Funding for Youth Boot Camp

Ventura County supervisors on Tuesday will consider approving a financing agreement with two neighboring counties to develop a boot camp for nonviolent youth offenders.
The supervisors agreed last year to join with Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties to apply for an $865,000 federal construction grant to build a 40-bed dormitory at the existing Los Prietos Boys Camp in Santa Barbara County.
The counties have since received the grant, but now each must come up with matching funds before moving forward with the $1.1-million project, said Melanie Markley, administrative manager for the Corrections Services Agency.
Ventura County’s portion is $211,667, which includes money for bunks and recreational equipment, Markley said. The money will come from federal grants already received by the Corrections Services Agency, she said.
Based on the current construction schedule, the boot camp is expected to be opened by September 1997.
