Number of Window Shatterings Falls

Only eight car windows were shattered along Los Angeles County freeways over the weekend, reaffirming that such attacks have dropped markedly since two men were apprehended last week in connection with some of the incidents.

Four were shattered Friday night and four Saturday night, for a total of 251 incidents since Sept. 11, when the spate of attacks began, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Pablo Torres.

On Oct. 1, the night of the greatest number of attacks, 42 rear windows on moving vehicles were shattered, often in quick succession, on freeways from the San Gabriel Valley to Hollywood.

Two of the drivers whose cars were damaged this weekend said they believed the windows had been shattered by rocks.

Torres said that while the CHP fielded a larger than usual number of patrols, no new arrests were made over the weekend.

The tally of shattered windows is now “within or below the average number of incidents that occurred before all this started,” he added.
