**Both Paramount and New Line contended Monday that they had the top-grossing film of the weekend. Each studio refused to release figures for most of the day because of distrust of the other’s figures. Late in the day, shortly after New Line announced numbers for “The Long Kiss Goodnight,” Paramount released slightly higher numbers for “The Ghost and the Darkness” and “The First Wives Club.” A New Line spokesman said the studio still believes its film “was the No. 1 movie this weekend.” (Related story appears on F1.)
