PC Ownership

* I’ve just read “PCs Saturating Southland, With 46% Ownership” (Oct. 6). The lead overstates the actual poll results. You say that last year 36% of people in the country owned personal computers. This year 46% of the people in L.A. and Orange counties own them. From this you infer that “the Southland has become one of the most computer-saturated regions in the country.” For your lead to be justified by the poll, it would have to show that during the last year (or however long it’s been since the national poll was taken), the rest of the country didn’t increase its PC ownership, or increased it much less than L.A.

Even if no one outside L.A. bought a computer in the last year, you would have to show the geographic breakdown for the rest of the country. It is entirely possible that 26% of Alabamans and 46% of New Yorkers have PCs.
