The Los Angeles Police Protective League will announce today that it is endorsing incumbent Gil Garcetti for district attorney.

Despite a recent history of friction between the Los Angeles Police Department and the district attorney’s office, the 9,100-member union voted to back Garcetti over challenger John Lynch.

League officials did not return calls Monday seeking comment. But both Garcetti and Lynch’s campaign manager, Rick Taylor, confirmed the endorsement.

Garcetti previously had obtained the endorsements of a variety of law enforcement groups, including the Assn. of Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs and the Police Officers Research Assn. of California. He said Tuesday, “For one to be an effective D.A., he really needs law enforcement support.

”. . . The law enforcement support is there,” he said. “It’s 99 to 1 in my favor.”

Taylor attributed the Police Protective League endorsement to a “board of directors that is totally out of step with the front-line police officers on the streets.”

Lynch, who heads the D.A.’s Norwalk branch office, has been endorsed by the Santa Monica Police Officers Assn., Taylor said.
