Memorial Service Friday for Officer Killed in Crash

A memorial service is scheduled Friday for Karl Duane Simons of Fullerton, the police officer killed Sunday while responding to a stolen-car report in Long Beach.

Simons, a four-year veteran of the Long Beach Police Department, died when his patrol car bumped another car and slammed into a signpost on the Long Beach Freeway, California Highway Patrol investigators said. The impact of the crash cut the car in half and hurled the officer across the divider into southbound lanes.

Simons, leaves a wife and a 7-month-old daughter.

The service is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. at Saints Simon & Jude, 20444 Magnolia St., Huntington Beach.
