Opponents of Studio Complex to Fight Ruling

Opponents of a proposed movie studio near Marina del Rey took steps Tuesday to overturn a court ruling that cleared the way for construction of the complex.
The opponents are seeking to block DreamWorks SKG, the brainchild of entertainment industry moguls Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen. The studio would occupy land southeast of the marina and would be part of the massive Playa Vista project, which includes office buildings and housing.
A coalition of environmental and community groups filed suit in January, demanding that the studio project be subjected to a full environmental impact report. But Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David A. Horowitz ruled in July that the developer’s assessment of the effects of studio construction complied with the state’s environmental law.
On Tuesday, the opponents filed legal papers in Superior Court notifying the developer and the studio’s investors of plans to appeal Horowitz’s ruling to the state Court of Appeals.
At a news conference in Playa del Rey, a spokesman for the coalition said that legal briefs for the appeal would probably be filed in the next two months.
