City to Seek Bids for Arroyo Project

Pushing forward with efforts to build a pedestrian bridge across the Arroyo Simi, Moorpark officials will now seek construction bids for the project.

The City Council voted at 12:10 a.m. Thursday to solicit bids from construction companies to build the bridge near Liberty Bell Road. The 161-foot, concrete span will cost about $390,000 to build, according to city estimates.

The move comes one week after the council voted to offer Southern California Edison, which owns property needed for the bridge’s southern landing, $7,700 for easements across the company’s land. Should the company reject the offer, the council may seize the property through condemnation.

Efforts to build the bridge have stretched on for years. The project became a higher priority for city officials earlier this year after an 11-year-old boy drowned in the arroyo after a winter storm.

Council members initially hoped to build the bridge before the upcoming rainy season, but have conceded that they will not be able to meet that goal.
