From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A New York City police captain was seriously wounded by a sniper outside the Bronx precinct station where he worked, police said. Capt. Steven Plavnick, 47, was in serious but stable condition after surgery to remove a bullet from his back. The 4:20 a.m. EDT shooting came less than 10 hours after a police lieutenant was shot and killed by a violent career criminal during a shootout in Brooklyn. Police said they had no suspects in the latest shooting but were looking into the possibility that the attack on Plavnick may have been committed by someone seeking revenge. Another officer in the precinct, Francis Livoti, was recently cleared in the chokehold death of a young man. That verdict was greeted by angry crowds protesting the judge’s decision.
