Wilson Doesn’t Want a Sequel

Coach Ron Wilson responded to the team’s performance in Friday night’s 4-1 loss to San Jose with a 1 1/2-hour video session before practice Saturday morning, most of it devoted to reviewing the mistakes made in that game.

Wilson chose that route instead of punishing the team on the ice with an all-out skating session.

“I don’t think that would help,” defenseman David Karpa said. “The problem right now is we’re making mental mistakes. We’ve got rookie mistakes being made by veterans, and it’s got to stop.”

The Ducks gave up a club-record three short-handed goals while going 0 for 7 on the power play. They also took bad penalties that led to power-play opportunities for San Jose, a team the Ducks probably need to leave in their wake if they hope to make the playoffs.

“Going over the video helps people see their mistakes and learn from them,” Karpa said. “In this game, your peers are your teammates and getting shown up in front of your teammates wakes you up.”

The Ducks haven’t picked up where they left off last season, when they finished with only three losses in their final 17 games.

“You can’t help but think: There have been so many changes again,” goalie Guy Hebert said.

There are seven players who weren’t with the team at the end of last season, and three who joined the team after the final exhibition game--Ted Drury, Kevin Todd and Barry Nieckar.

In addition, Wilson, Teemu Selanne, Jari Kurri, Mikhail Shtalenkov and Hebert arrived in camp late because of the World Cup of Hockey, Roman Oksiuta and Karpa were delayed by contract disputes, and Paul Kariya has yet to practice with the team because of his injury.
