Board to Weigh Adding a Fundamental School

Facing long waiting lists and parent requests, officials tonight will consider adding another fundamental school to the city system.

Santa Ana Unified School District already has two elementary and one intermediate school that are designated as fundamental, which require parents to be involved with campus activities and students to comply with behavior and dress codes.

According to the district, 843 students are on the waiting list for the two elementary fundamental schools. Another 598 are on the waiting list for MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate School.

Earlier this year, the school board conducted a fundamental schools survey and found that 71% of respondents said they would consider enrolling their children on such campuses.

The district tonight will consider designating Jim Thorpe Elementary, being built in the city’s southwest area, as a fundamental school.

The campus, expected to open by September 1998, would enroll as many as 780 students on a regular schedule, director of facilities Mike Vail said.
