Residents Scuttle Parking Lot Plan

Share

A group of residents has defeated a shopping center’s plan to purchase an abandoned railway easement for a parking lot.

The City Council was set to approve the expansion proposal by the Plaza Lafayette shopping center Monday night, Mayor Tracy Wills Worley said, but members unanimously voted down the plan after about 15 nearby residents protested.

The property, a strip of nearly an acre near 13031 Newport Ave., has provided a buffer from the noise and traffic of the existing parking lot, the residents argued.

The abandoned property is owned by Southern Pacific Transportation Co., which had planned to sell it to the shopping center.

But the deal required city approval because it called for a zoning change.
