UC Irvine Wins Golf Invitational

UC Irvine won the University of San Francisco Invitational men’s golf tournament by one stroke Tuesday at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Irvine finished with a 54-hole total of 901. San Diego State was second (902), Pacific third (903) and Oregon fourth (905).

Irvine’s Mike Lawrence shot two-over 73 in the final round to finish eighth at 10-over 223 and Conan Vitale shot 77 Tuesday to finish 14th (225).

The medalist was Pacific’s Sean Corte-Real of Pacific, who shot 71 and won a playoff with Justin Peters of Nevada.

Irvine’s Shawn Morley shot 72 to finish 16th at 227. Irvine’s Scott Rynders shot 74 to finish tied for 40th with the Anteaters’ Alan Sue at 234.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Point Loma Nazarene 3, Southern California College 0--Point Loma Nazarene avenged an earlier loss to SCC with a 15-1, 15-10, 15-5 victory. Darci Hess had 16 kills and eight digs to lead Point Loma (17-9, 7-4). The Vanguards dropped to 13-13, 3-8.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Chapman 3, Redlands 0--Shawna Parkinson had 15 kills and Addy Benard had 11 kills and six blocks for host Chapman (6-10), which won, 15-9, 15-9, 16-14.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo:

UC Irvine 14, Long Beach State 7--Omar Amr, Robert Allaire and Ryan Bailey each scored three goals for visiting Irvine (9-5, 5-0). Jeff Hall, Derek Lefkowith and Jeff Colyer each scored two goals for Long Beach (2-11, 0-5).

Women’s soccer:

The nonconference women’s soccer match between UC Irvine and Pepperdine, scheduled for Tuesday in Malibu, was postponed because of the fires in the area. The match will be played 4 p.m. today at Irvine.
