Now that several bands from the Orange County-Long Beach alternative rock scene have made an imprint on the national consciousness, it might be time to look for the next musical wave emerging here. Anybody for funky instrumental dance bands? 00Soul certainly qualifies, with a combination of horns, keyboards, guitar, meaty funk grooves, Latin rhythms and hip-hop sound cuts that takes off on such classic influences as Sly Stone and James Brown, Santana and War. (In fact, trumpeter Hank Ballard Jr., son of the R&B; great who wrote “The Twist,” has played with Brown and War.) 00Soul is the brainchild of its two composers, DJ Gary Tesch, a mainstay of the local club scene, and guitarist Ian Yater.

George Shearing, the pianist from London who wrote “Lullaby of Birdland,” has recorded with Nat “King” Cole, Nancy Wilson and Mel Torme, among others, while gaining a reputation on his own as an enlightening solo and trio player. His many sides will be on display Saturday when he performs solo, in a duo with bassist Neil Swainson, and with a quintet that will reconstruct the sounds of his New York heyday.

Music

Like the “Magnificat,” which is said to have been the Virgin Mary’s spontaneous response to the news that she was pregnant with Christ, the “Te Deum” for years was considered a spontaneous hymn of praise to God, composed by saints Ambrose and Augustine when Augustine was baptized. Evidence now points to a later author, but in any case, the hymn long has been sung on occasions of rejoicing. John Alexander will launch the 29th season of the Pacific Chorale with four settings of the “Te Deum” text--by Bruckner, Dvorak, Verdi and American composer Vincent Persichetti.
