Boy Scouts Out to Collect Food for 1 Million

Boy Scouts hope to collect a record 1 million meals during their annual food drive.
The Boy Scouts of America, Orange County Council, aims to top the 900,000 meals gathered for the hungry last year. Organizers estimate there are three meals in every pound of food they collect, spokesman Devon Dougherty said.
More than 10,000 Boy Scouts are expected to participate in the Nov. 9 to 16 drive. The mission is to fill 600,000 bags with food and clothing.
“It’s a visual display of the good turn Scouting is known for,” Dougherty said. “When you turn loose these thousands and thousands of Scouts, it makes a difference.”
Scouts will take collections to 26 drop-off sites countywide. A National Guard battalion from Bell is expected to help the Scouts load the food onto military supply trucks and transport it to the Food Distribution Center in Orange.
The Orange County council began Scouting for Food eight years ago. The purpose is to feed the hungry and to motivate Scouts to help those in need.
People who wish to donate can contact local Scouting troops or take food to any Coco’s Family Restaurant after Nov. 16.
