Hermosa Beach Police Receive Award From National Group

The Redondo Beach Police Department has received a national award for its efforts to make the beach city a safer place to live.

The Police Executive Research Forum, a national organization composed of officers who exchange ideas and provide training and assistance on law enforcement projects, awarded the department for the gang injunction it sought and won in court to curb the gang problem in north Redondo Beach.

The injunction, granted by Torrance Superior Court Judge Robert Mallono in May, was part of a city civil lawsuit that was filed against the 28-member Northside Redondo 13 Gang. Members had been disrupting the neighborhood and gathering in Perry Park late at night.

Police Capt. Jeff Cameron said residents complained about increased gang violence and loitering in the park. The temporary restraining order against the gang prohibits members from loitering in the park and associating with anyone carrying a firearm. If gang members violate the court injunction, police can arrest them.

Since the restraining order was obtained, Cameron said crime in the area has been reduced by 39% and violent crime by 87%.
