Huntington Beach Shuts Down Marina

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It was Marina’s homecoming, but Huntington Beach tailback Jason Locklin reigned Thursday as the Oilers spoiled the festivities with a 21-0 Sunset League victory at Westminster High.

Locklin, a senior, carried 29 times for 135 yards and scored once. He accounted for more than half the offense for Huntington Beach (3-4, 1-1 in league).

He carried eight times on a 10-play scoring drive spanning the first and second quarters, setting up a 12-yard Eric Yang scoring run. Locklin scored on a two-yard plunge in the third quarter to increase the lead to 14-0, then cut loose for 29 yards to set up the final Oiler touchdown in the final quarter, a six-yard pass from Dave Van Hoorebeke to tight end Scott Moser.

Marina never got in sync, as the Vikings were held to 20 net yards in the second half and 91 yards for the game.

“Our offense played a miserable football game,” Marina Coach Mark Rehling said. “The offensive line didn’t execute, our quarterback made some sophomore choices, and we didn’t run great routes.”

Marina (1-6, 0-1) was fortunate the final score was not worse, as the Oilers had two long touchdowns called back on the same possession in the second quarter. Most of an 80-yard punt return by Van Hoorebeke was negated after a clipping penalty, and moments later a 78-yard touchdown pass from Van Hoorebeke to Dennis Masuda was nullified because of an illegal man downfield. Huntington Beach eventually had to punt.
