District Takes Action to Name New School

Newport-Mesa Unified’s new elementary campus, now known simply as the “down-coast school,” needs a real name, district officials said this week, and they requested a committee to come up with just the right one.

The board of trustees asked Supt. Mac Bernd to select school personnel and residents to name the school.

Newport-Mesa paid $7.1 million last summer to buy 11 acres at Newport Coast Drive and Ridge Park Road for the new campus.

The money for the land and construction will be repaid by homeowners through a new tax assessment district.

The new school, which will be Newport-Mesa’s first in more than 20 years, is needed to accommodate growth in the Newport Coast area, where new homes are under construction, officials said. There is no school in the area now.

Though the school will not be open until the fall of 1999, trustees said, they would like to adopt a name as soon as possible.

“It would be nice to have a sign on it while it is under construction telling people what the school will be called,” Trustee Martha Fluor said.

Anyone interested in serving on the committee may contact Virginia Pelletier at district headquarters, (714) 760-3502.
