It’s time, you’ve decided, to add a member to the family--of the canine variety. But how should you choose? You know that selecting just the right dog for you and your home is not as easy as picking out a new pair of shoes, yet that’s how much thought some people commit to such an important decision.

The responsible prospective pet parent-to-be does research. Now, during Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month, a video called “Puppies!” has come to the rescue. The Bonneville Worldwide Entertainment release addresses such needs as space requirements, exercise, training and nutrition of breeds ranging from the tiny Chihuahua to the statuesque Irish wolfhound.

Actor Powers Boothe narrates the 60-minute video, which provides enough cute footage to entertain anyone with a heart. But more important, the production offers an introduction that might ensure that the puppy you take home today doesn’t end up abandoned because it grew up to be a dog you didn’t expect.

For instance:

* Are you athletic? If not, don’t fall in love with that adorable Australian shepherd pup. As an adult, it will need a parent who is as athletic as it is.

* Do you live in an apartment? Run, don’t walk, away from an Irish wolfhound. It needs lots of room.

* Are you prepared to commit time to grooming Lassie? If not, don’t set your sights on a rough collie, a Lhasa apso or a Pekingese.

* Are you ready to spend the necessary time to train King to be a loving pet? If not, you’ll find that a Doberman pinscher is not your cup of tea.

The loving dog owner is the informed dog owner. “Puppies!” is a good starting point.

* “Puppies!” is available from Bonneville Worldwide Entertainment; $14.95. (800) 654-1686.
