Bruins Still Have Plenty in Reserve

With free safety Shaun Williams out because of an injury, and with strong safety Abdul McCullough hampered by a cast on a broken hand, some seldom-used UCLA reserves were called upon in Saturday’s victory over California at Berkeley.
Glenn Thompkins, playing for Williams, had five tackles and forced a fumble; Larry Atkins, subbing for McCullough (who also had four tackles) had six stops and broke up a pass; and Eric Whitfield, who played for linebacker Brian Willmer, who was struggling with Cal tight end Tony Gonzalez, had two tackles and broke up a pass.
“This time of year, you’re getting some guys dinged up a little bit and other guys have got to step up,” Coach Bob Toledo said. “They are getting a scholarship too, and they’ve got to perform like the rest of the guys.”
