Divers Near End of Search for Wreckage
Divers who have recovered pieces of Trans World Airlines Flight 800 expect to finish their work within days, officials said, and scallop trawlers will then begin dredging for wreckage believed buried beneath silt on the ocean’s floor. “The Navy is running out of targets that it is picking up off the bottom,” said Robert Francis, vice chairman of the the National Transportation Safety Board. More than 95% of the plane has been recovered, but the reason why the Boeing 747 with 230 passengers aboard crashed into the Atlantic minutes after taking off from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport on July 17 remains a mystery.
