Hazzard Continues Recovery From Stroke

Share

Walt Hazzard, a Laker scout and special administrative assistant, could reach a milestone and get another boost in his recovery as soon as today by returning to practice for the first time since suffering a near-fatal stroke in March.

If Hazzard isn’t at the Forum today, he figures to attend a workout soon, and maybe even a game. Though still weakened, especially on the right side, and at times struggling with his speech, the former UCLA coach has made significant progress and is able to get around with the help of a cane.

A trip to a summer-league game at Cal State Long Beach to watch Kobe Bryant, like Hazzard a Philadelphian, became an emotional lift when people approached Hazzard with good wishes and encouragement.

Whether Hazzard will ever return to work remains to be seen. But the Lakers gave him a two-year contract extension just before the start of training camp.
