Trustees of the Rancho Santiago Community College District have adopted a resolution stating their opposition to Proposition 209, which would end government-sponsored affirmative action programs, including those in education.

“We support access to higher education in the state of California regardless of a student’s race, gender, color, ethnicity or national origin,” Board President Enriqueta L. Ramos said.

Voters will decide the fate of the initiative next Tuesday. Supporters say the measure will create racial equality by banning preferences in education, hiring and contracting by state and local government. Opponents say the proposition will hurt opportunities for women and minorities.
