Blues Get Turgeon in Five-Player Deal
The St. Louis Blues acquired the center Brett Hull has long pined for, getting Pierre Turgeon from the Montreal Canadiens in a five-player deal.
The deal cost the Blues center-wing Shayne Corson, defenseman Murray Baron and a fifth-round draft choice in 1997. Montreal also sent the Blues defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick and minor league center Craig Conroy.
“I’m sure Brett will have to be happy,” Blues General Manager-Coach Mike Keenan said.
Paired with Adam Oates, Hull had a career-high 86 goals in 1990-91. Oates was traded to Boston the next season in a contract squabble and Hull has never quite been the same.
Turgeon was acquired April 5, 1995 from the New York Islanders. He led the Canadiens in scoring last season with 96 points, including 38 goals. In 1992-93 he had career highs of 58 goals and 132 points and won the Lady Byng Trophy for gentlemanly play.
