The city is moving forward with plans to take utility lines underneath Gilbert Street from north of Broadway to north of Lincoln Avenue. Officials said the project will beautify the neighborhoods and increase traffic safety.

Construction is expected to begin in January on the $2.4-million project, which is part of a $46-million citywide plan to bury utility lines. The cost for the city-owned utilities is paid through a 4% fee on electric bills. Telephone and cable companies pick up the tab for burying their lines.

Elsewhere in the city, 24 underground projects are either completed or under construction, including sections in the Anaheim Resort Area.

Traffic safety is a major concern, officials said, since overhead electrical units and power lines can contribute to obstructing visibility.
