Second Case of Illness May Be Linked to Apple Juice

Los Angeles County health officials Friday were investigating a second suspected case of an illness in a toddler that may be linked to a recalled brand of apple juice.

Sharon Wanglin, a county Department of Health Services spokeswoman, said that two children--ages 18 months and 22 months--came down with bacterial infections in the last three days.

One child was in the hospital, while the other was at home. Both are improving, Wanglin said. Both had consumed Odwalla fruit juice, she said.

Odwalla recalled its apple juice products in seven Western states after 13 illnesses in the Seattle area were linked to the California-made product. Late Friday, officials reported a total of 49 confirmed or suspected E. coli cases in three states.
