Newland Nears Milestone as Anteaters Beat Pacific

Omar Amr and Ryan Bailey each scored three goals as fifth-ranked UC Irvine defeated Pacific, 7-3, Saturday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Heritage Park.

The Anteaters are 10-6, 6-1 in conference.

Goalkeeper Tom Davis had nine saves for the Anteaters.

It was UC Irvine Coach Ted Newland’s 599th career victory. Newland goes for No. 600 at noon today, when the Anteaters play at UC San Diego.

In the Big West cross-country championships:

UC Irvine men and women finish fourth--The Boise State men’s team had five runners finish among the top six. UC Irvine finished fourth and Long Beach State finished fifth.

Boise State’s Jose Uribe won with a time of 24 minutes 54 seconds on the five-mile course in Boise. Pat Bendzick of Long Beach State finished 14th in 26:23. UCI’s Jorge Gutierrez finished 16th (26:29).

Nevada’s Denise Danielson won the women’s race in 17:36 over 5,000 meters, leading her team to the championship.

UCI’s Jamie Blair (18:30) finished 10th and the Anteaters took fourth as a team. Cal State Fullerton’s Sonia Perez (18:43) finished 15th.

In Big West women’s volleyball:

Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Irvine 0--Shelly Smith had 18 kills for the Titans, who won, 15-8, 15-5, 15-13. Teammate Heather Bassett added 15 kills.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Southern California College 3, Azusa Pacific 0--Christine Heims recorded 12 kills for Southern California College, which won, 15-9, 15-11, 1-15, 15-7. Teammate Sally Birkhauser had 11 kills.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer:

Southern California College 4, Biola 0--Jamie Gardiner scored three goals for the Vanguards (10-7-1, 2-4-1). Lori Van Herk added a fourth goal in the final minutes.

In exhibition men’s basketball:

Long Beach State Black 46, Long Beach State Gold 41--Akeli Jackson scored 15 points in leading the Black team to victory. Teammate Brian Yankelevitz scored 11 points and D’Cean Bryant scored 10 for the Black team.

Freshman Greg Clark led the Gold with 12 points.
