Flyers End Panthers’ Unbeaten Run

The Florida Panthers fell three games shy of tying the longest unbeaten streak at the start of an NHL season when the Philadelphia Flyers defeated them, 3-2, on Saturday at Miami.

Joel Otto scored his first goal of the season with 1:02 remaining for Philadelphia, which dropped the Panthers to 8-1-4 as they fell short of Edmonton’s record unbeaten streak. The Oilers’ went 12-0-3 at the beginning of their championship season in 1984-85.

N.Y. Rangers 5, Boston 2--Wayne Gretzky extended his scoring streak to 14 games and the Rangers reached the .500 mark (6-6-3) for the first time with a victory at Boston.

The Rangers took a 4-0 lead in the first period on goals by Alexei Kovalev, Daniel Goneau, Mark Messier and Gretzky, who has seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points this season.

Pittsburgh 7, Ottawa 3--Jaromir Jagr completed his third career hat trick with two third-period goals to help the slumping Penguins end a four-game losing streak with a win over the Senators at Pittsburgh.

The Penguins’ 3-9-0 record has matched their worst start in franchise history, set in 1983-84, their last season before Mario Lemieux arrived.

N.Y. Islanders 6, Washington 1--Zigmund Palffy had a four-point game with two goals and two assists and Eric Fichaud stopped 28 shots at Uniondale, N.Y., as the Islanders gained only their second victory of the season.

Derek King scored twice and added an assist for the Islanders, who also got goals from Marty McInnis and Bryan McCabe.

Toronto 6, Detroit 2--Felix Potvin made 28 saves and Sergei Berezin scored two goals as the Maple Leafs defeated the Red Wings in a game marking the 65th anniversary of Maple Leaf Gardens.

New Jersey 2, Tampa Bay 1--Dave Andreychuk and Scott Niedermayer scored power-play goals in the first period and Devil goaltender Martin Brodeur made 26 saves at East Rutherford, N.J.

Colorado 0, Buffalo 0--Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy earned his 33rd career shutout with 20 saves and Dominick Hasek became the Sabres’ all-time leader with his 16th shutout at Denver.

Vancouver 4, Calgary 3--Jyrki Lumme, Trevor Linden, Adrian Aucoin and Mike Ridley scored and the Canucks withstood two late goals by the Flames to win at Vancouver.

San Jose 4, Montreal 3--Darren Turcotte scored his sixth goal of the season with 1:53 left in overtime to give the Sharks a victory over the Canadiens at San Jose.
