Workshops Planned on Street Redesign

The public’s thoughts on how Santa Monica Boulevard should be redesigned to ease traffic congestion will be heard at a public workshop Wednesday.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is considering two plans that would reduce traffic and increase safety on the boulevard between the San Diego Freeway and Marino Drive, said MTA spokesman Gary Wosk. The plans also seek to improve the boulevard’s look and protect nearby residential areas from increased traffic.

Traffic on the boulevard is often jammed at intersections that must also accommodate traffic from Little Santa Monica Boulevard. The plans would simplify the flow of traffic to the intersections, and possibly eliminate portions of the smaller parallel street.

The first plan, dubbed “Classic Boulevard,” calls for a six-lane center roadway with bicycle lanes and one-way side roads. The second plan calls for an eight-lane roadway with bicycle lanes and pedestrian-friendly wide sidewalks and a shorter side road.

The workshop will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at Emerson Middle School, 1560 Selby Ave. A second meeting is scheduled from 11:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 20 at the Century City Community Room, 2029 Century Park East, Suite 410, Century City.
