Council to Discuss New Library Hours

Thousand Oaks Mayor Andy Fox wants to make sure the city’s library opens on Fridays starting in January, something City Council members voted to do earlier this year without deciding where the money would come from.

At Fox’s urging, the City Council tonight will discuss how to make sure the Thousand Oaks Library opens seven days a week shortly after it moves back to its main facility on Janss Road. The library is currently operating out of a temporary location on Willow Lane.

The main library building has been closed since it suffered damage in the Northridge earthquake, and toxic spores were discovered in the walls and air afterward. It is set to reopen Nov. 25 after a major refurbishing.

As part of its two-year budget, the City Council voted to open the library for daily use. Council members directed city officials to look at ways to pay for the extra hours, which are expected to cost about $120,000 a year.

Fox is hoping to sort out where the money to open the library will come from before January, so city officials can reorganize schedules and recruit for new positions. He wants the City Council to make the decision at its Nov. 19 meeting.
