Sen. Graham Won’t Seek Florida Governorship

MIAMI — Sen. Bob Graham (D-Fla.) said Monday he won’t run for Florida governor in 1998 but would seek a third term in Congress.
For months, Graham considered returning to Florida to run for the job he held from 1978 to 1986, before he was elected to the Senate.
His candidacy would have led to a divisive Democratic primary with Lt. Gov. Buddy MacKay, who is backed by Gov. Lawton Chiles. The winner would likely face a fierce campaign against Republican Jeb Bush, who narrowly lost to Chiles in the 1994 election. Chiles is barred from seeking a third term.
