Funds Set Aside for City Police Services
Ventura County supervisors have agreed to set aside more than $250,000 for new police services within the city of Camarillo.
The money is included in the $5.2 million that the Camarillo City Council agreed last September to pay the county to provide police protection to the city of 60,000 residents.
But supervisors on Tuesday needed to authorize their auditor-controller to process the transaction so that city officials can proceed with hiring new officers under the federal government’s COPS program.
Short for Citizens Options for Public Safety, the program allows cities across the country to receive federal matching funds for expanding their police departments.
For Camarillo, that means three extra people, including one deputy, a technician and a crime analyst. The positions are expected to be filled before the end of the year.
The money also will pay for a new police car and new computer equipment.
