Shop Offers Boutique Styling for Small Fry

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Last year I wrote about Kids Outlet in Agoura Hills, a good source for designer apparel for children. Now, owner Kathleen Silvers has opened yet another source for the muppet crowd. This one, called KD Kids, is on Calabasas Road and offers more trendy fashions for the small fry.

Silvers is reluctant to divulge the names of the labels you’ll find there, but, trust me, they are some of the good designer brands found in expensive boutiques. Only here the prices are 30% to 60% lower.

The store has a safari-theme decor, with faux leopard-skin rugs, animal prints and monkey, tiger and zebra stuffed toys. The mood pleases the small shoppers and creates an ambience that in no way suggests the low prices. In other words, the store only looks expensive.

Some of the specific bargains on a recent shopping trip were girls’ polar fleece coats with fake fur trim, which appear in some fairly pricey catalogs for $110 to $125. Here they were tagged $39.99 and $49.99. Some over-dye girls’ dresses and separates that regularly sell for $26 to $58 elsewhere are tagged $9.99 to $34.99.

Boys sherpa cotton button-down shirts (2T) are usually priced to sell for $40, but with Silvers’ buying formula she can sell them for $21.99 and still make a profit.

One-piece rompers for infants--seen in boutiques for $27--were $9.99. For gifts, I’d go for the 100% cotton pajamas and long johns for boys or girls for a comfortable $19.95, rather than the regular retail of $35.

All the merchandise is first quality and current, or from last season’s inventory, and represents manufacturers’ overruns and close-outs, cherry-picked by Silvers herself. Sizes for girls go from newborn to 12 and newborn to 7 for boys.

There’s a nice play area, which helps when you’re shopping with kids.

Weekend Super Sale: Every holiday season, I check out the wallpaper specials so I’ll have plenty of gift wrap (only the thinnest will work), which you might keep in mind when you check out the One-Cent Sale at the Wallpaper Bin. Prices here are already heavily discounted, like $8.99 for a $35 roll, but with this current sale you get a second roll for just one penny.

The selections are terrific, and even without this special deal you’ll probably never want to go to another wallpaper store. The sale is through November at both Wallpaper Bin locations: 17139 Ventura Blvd., Encino, (818) 788-1291; and 4255 E. Main St., Ventura, (805) 642-6422.
