UCLA Survives Irvine Rally

Third-ranked UCLA withstood a late rally by fifth-ranked UC Irvine and won, 6-5, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo contest Sunday at UCLA.

UCLA’s Jim Toring scored with 1 minute 21 seconds left to put the Bruins up, 6-4.

UCLA goaltender Matt Swanson deflected an two-point attempt by UCI’s Craig Watson just over the net with about 10 seconds left.

Omar Amr came back with four seconds left to score a goal for UC Irvine (13-7, 6-2).

Amr finished with a team-high three goals and Greg Finley and Ryan Bailey had one goal each for UC Irvine.

Corbin Graham had a two-pointer and another goal to lead UCLA (21-3, 6-2). Jeremy Braxton-Brown, Jeff Porter and Toring also scored for UCLA.

Swanson finished with 10 saves and UC Irvine’s Tom Davis had nine.

UC Irvine ends the regular season Saturday at UC Santa Barbara. The Anteaters then play in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament Nov. 29 to Dec. 1 in Berkeley.

In a women’s exhibition basketball game:

Slovan Bratislava 61, UC Irvine 56--Kristin Cappel, a freshman, scored 16 points and had 13 rebounds for host UC Irvine.

Junior Leticia Oseguera had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Anteaters, who start the regular season Nov. 23 against St. Mary’s.
